Cellular instabilities in directional solidification
نویسندگان
چکیده
2014 We have studied the morphology of the solid-liquid interface during the directional solidification of thin (5-150 03BCm) samples of a dilute binary mixture (CBr4/~ 0.1 % Br2) . Above a critical pulling speed, for a given temperature gradient and solute concentration, the interface, initially planar, breaks down into a periodic cellular pattern. The bifurcation from a planar to a cellular solidification front is sub-critical. The critical pulling speed is strongly dependent on the thickness of the sample : the problem cannot be considered two-dimensional. We have also measured wavelengths at, and above the threshold and examined response times. These results are compared to existing theoretical predictions. J. 4D synchrotron X-ray tomographic quantification of the transition from cellular to dendrite growth during directional solidification
Solidification morphology directly impacts the mechanical properties of materials; hence many models of the morphological evolution of dendritic structures have been formulated. However, there is a paucity of validation data for directional solidification models, especially the direct observations of metallic alloys, both for cellular and dendritic structures. In this study, we performed 4D syn...
متن کاملEffects of flow on morphological stability during directional solidification
Research involving the interaction of flow with morphological instability during directional solidification of binary alloys is reviewed. In general, flow may arise during the solidification process from thermal and solutal buoyancy, changes in density upon solidification, thermocapillary forces at free boundaries, or external forcing of the system. We focus primarily on the last of these, givi...
متن کاملCell Shapes in Directional Solidification : a Global Study
We experimentally characterize the whole shape of growth cells in directional solidification, from their tip to their grooves, and in a large domain of control parameter. For this a library of cell shapes is determined and fitted to a class of definite shape functions. This first global characterization of cell geometry in both the real space and the control parameter space provides a firm grou...
متن کاملCritical Role of Crystalline Anisotropy in the Stability of Cellular Array Structures in Directional Solidification.
We calculate numerically the full Floquet-Bloch stability spectrum of cellular array structures in a symmetric model of directional solidification. Our results demonstrate that crystalline anisotropy critically influences the stability of these structures. Without anisotropy, the stability balloon of cells in the plane of wave number and velocity closes near the onset of morphological instabili...
متن کاملCrossover scaling of wavelength selection in directional solidification of binary alloys.
We simulate cellular and dendritic growth in directional solidification in dilute binary alloys using a phase-field model solved with adaptive-mesh refinement. The spacing of primary branches is examined for a wide range of thermal gradients and alloy compositions and is found to undergo a maximum as a function of pulling velocity, in agreement with experimental observations. We demonstrate tha...
